Uruguay and Brazil finalize zero tariff agreement for products from free zones and marketing of yerba mate

The agreement had been signed in June by Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo with his Brazilian counterpart, Carlos França, in Los Angeles, while the Summit of the Americas was taking place.

Uruguay and Brazil completed the process of incorporation into their respective
legal systems the protocols that will enable the liberalization of trade of goods from free zones and the marketing of yerba mate, As reported Chancellery this Friday.

“Both countries are coordinating communication before the General Secretariat of ALADI, in order to comply with the pending formalities for the entry into force of the aforementioned Additional Protocols”, says the statement.

The incorporated protocols are Additional Protocols 83 and 84 to the Economic Complementation Agreement (ACE) No. 2.

The agreement had been signed in June by the chancellor Francisco Bustillo with his Brazilian counterpart, Carlos France, in Los Angeles, while the Summit of the Americas was taking place.

On that occasion, government sources had explained that the protocol regarding the free trade zone "has a value for Uruguay equivalent to a free trade agreement with Brazil", in the sense that from its validity all industrial production carried out in Uruguayan free zones will have free access to the neighboring country's market.

From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that “It entails an expansion of the regime and opens the possibility for Uruguay to attract new productive investments that would have a positive impact on the generation of new quality jobs.”.

Regarding the agreement involving the yerba mate, set a new
technical criteria in health matters for “avoid the imposition of a non-tariff barrier that hinders the entry of yerba mate from Brazil to Uruguay”.

Both agreements are in force for an indefinite period.
